Living with Japanese handcrafted objects

About Tsumuge

Japanese Objects, Crafted for Everyday Living.

A story of handcrafted Japanese objects — not to be admired from a distance, but to be lived with.

Brand Statement

Japan has a long tradition of making things by hand — objects shaped over generations by artisans dedicated to craftsmanship that endures.

The more you use them, the more they become yours. A mug that becomes part of your morning tea ritual. A tray worn smooth by daily use. Value that grows, not fades, with time.

This is the value of Japanese craftsmanship — and what we hope to bring into everyday life around the world.

"Tradition does not survive by being preserved.
It survives by being used."

Our Story

Early in my career as a magazine editor, I had the opportunity to travel across Japan covering traditional Japanese craftsmanship. I still remember visiting a pottery studio for a feature on ceramics and watching an artisan shape clay with practiced precision. What captivated me was not only the beauty of what he made, but the intention behind it — objects designed to be lived with, shaped by generations of makers and refined through use.

Over time, I began bringing these objects into my own life. A Mashiko ware cup for my morning coffee. A Yamanaka lacquer bowl at dinner. Objects collected through travel and used every day rather than displayed on a shelf. They brought a quiet richness to daily life. Through these experiences, I came to believe that handcrafted Japanese objects are meant not only to be admired, but to be lived with.

Yet this world still feels distant to many. Japan has a remarkable heritage of handcrafted objects, yet the stories behind them — and the pleasure of living with them — remain unfamiliar to much of the world. Many of these traditions also face an uncertain future, challenged by aging artisans and a lack of successors.

Tsumuge (pronounced "TSOO-moozh") was created to help bridge that gap — not by presenting these objects as something rare or precious, but by showing how naturally they belong in everyday life. The name is inspired by the Japanese word tsumugu (pronounced "TSOO-moo-goo") — to spin, to weave, and to connect. We hope to weave together making and living, maker and user, past and future.

Perhaps learning about these objects and the people who make them is also a way of seeing everyday life differently. And it is those small choices, made again and again, that help carry a tradition forward.

Our Mission

Our Vision

A future where handcrafted Japanese objects find a place in lives around the world — quietly present in homes, around tables, and woven into everyday life.

Our Philosophy

What We Believe

01. Craftsmanship
Respect for the handmade

Decades, sometimes centuries, of accumulated skill and aesthetic sensibility. Not frozen in history — but a living body of knowledge, refined through use, passed forward through practice. Tsumuge exists to help bring that value into everyday life.

02. Thoughtful Living
A more intentional way of living

Choose well. Live with it long. Let affection grow. Thoughtfully made objects support that kind of life. Rather than speed or convenience, we value the warmth of what we touch and the stories behind it. This is the kind of life Tsumuge continues to explore.

03. Human Connection
Bridging maker and user

Behind every handcrafted object is a person. A philosophy, a place, a lineage of knowledge. By telling those stories with care, Tsumuge hopes to weave a quiet, lasting connection between the people who make and the people who live with what they make.

04. Timeless Value
Things that deepen with time

Patina is not wear. It is the object becoming yours. Colours that deepen with use. A surface that grows familiar to your touch. We believe in a relationship with objects that is not about consuming — but about growing alongside them.
