Tsumuge is now live—a website exploring life with handcrafted objects from Japan and sharing their stories with readers around the world.
Our aim is to bring Japanese craftsmanship into everyday life. Tsumuge explores the appeal of skills passed down through generations and the pleasure of using handcrafted objects in contemporary life. We introduce these objects not simply as special pieces to admire, but as things to use at home and at the table, and to grow attached to over time.
Published in English and Japanese, the website has two main sections. Objects explores the history, techniques, and distinctive qualities of handcrafted objects from across Japan. Stories shares firsthand experiences of using them, ideas for bringing them into daily life, and the voices of artisans carrying these skills forward. Together, they offer different ways to discover Japanese craftsmanship and find objects that feel at home in your life.
The name Tsumuge comes from tsumugu, a Japanese word meaning “to spin thread.” It reflects our wish to draw connections between objects and everyday life, between makers and the people who use their work, and between the past and the future.
By sharing the small moments in which objects become part of daily life, we hope to invite each reader to consider what a richer life means to them.
